Women Turn Up the Heat on Miller Beer

There will be no welcome mat in front of the corporate offices of Miller Beer in Milwaukee to greet the chief executives of South African Breweries as they arrive tomorrow.

February 11, 2007 - With visible and vocal support from brewery employees and other union workers, members of Local 35, OPEIU, who are mostly women, will gather in front of Miller Brewing Company, 3939 W. Highland Blvd. from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. and tell the visiting SAB Miller officials that the company's female employees deserve and demand to be treated as equals of their male co-workers.

To commemorate Miller's recent decision to can its "Man Law" ads that symbolized the company's discrimination against its women employees, several inflatable "Miller Girls" blowup dolls, dressed in Miller tee shirts and shorts will also accompany the Local 35 members. There will be balloons, placards, and a few surprises.

"The message is simple, but we're saying it loud and clear," said Judy Burnick, business manager of Local 35: "Thou shalt not discriminate against women."

Local 35 members, who perform numerous clerical and other office duties, have been parodying the company's defunct Man Law ads as they battle Miller for a fair contract, one that doesn't single them out for a huge giveback. The company is demanding a nasty pension freeze for Local 35 members, whose average age is 53 and who have worked for Miller for 25 years. But it has settled with all of its mostly male unions without freezing pensions, which, to begin with, are 40% higher than the pensions for Miller's female union employees. "At this point in time," said Burnick, "we're not really sure if the SAB folks know about the unconscionable demands that the company has made, only on us, or if they are the driving force behind them. But by the end of the day, they will know that we're not going to take them, and that our brother union members are standing with us in this nasty fight."
